Describing the Scene
It is early morning. The first light of the day is coming through the window, casting a warm golden glow across the table. A cup of coffee sits in the center, steam rising gently from its surface. The coffee is dark and rich, almost black, filling the room with its familiar, comforting aroma.
The table is made of wood — you can see the natural grain running across its surface. There might be a small spoon resting next to the cup, or perhaps a folded newspaper waiting to be opened. The whole scene feels calm and unhurried, as if time has slowed down just a little.
Useful Vocabulary
When we describe this kind of scene, there are many useful words and phrases we can practice:
- steam — the white mist rising from a hot drink. "Steam is rising from the cup."
- aroma — a pleasant, distinctive smell. "The aroma of fresh coffee filled the kitchen."
- golden glow — warm, soft light, often from the sun. "The morning sun cast a golden glow on the table."
- grain (of wood) — the natural pattern you see on a wooden surface. "The wooden table had a beautiful grain."
- unhurried — relaxed, not in a rush. "She enjoyed an unhurried breakfast."
Expanding the Description
Now let us try to add more detail and make the description more vivid.
Outside the window, the sky is a pale shade of blue, with just a few thin clouds stretching across the horizon. The neighbor's cat is sitting on the fence, watching the world wake up. Inside, the kitchen is quiet except for the gentle hum of the refrigerator and the occasional drip of the coffee maker.
I wrap my hands around the warm cup and take a slow sip. The coffee is slightly bitter, but in a pleasant way — the kind of bitterness that wakes you up and makes you feel alive. This is my favorite part of the day: the few minutes before the house comes alive, when everything is still and the day is full of possibility.
Try It Yourself
Look at the picture again. Can you write your own description? Here are some questions to help you:
- What kind of cup is it? Describe its shape, color, and material.
- What else might be on the table?
- What sounds can you imagine hearing?
- How does the person drinking this coffee feel?
- What might they do after finishing their coffee?
Remember: there is no wrong answer. The goal is to practice expressing yourself in English. Every sentence you write is a step forward.
